Choosing an Infant Carseat
Tips to help you pick the right carseat to keep your little one safe.
Are you concerned about keeping up to date on the most relevant infant carseat information? Most people with young babies are. That's a good thing. So where do you start when narrowing down the right carseat and installation procedures for your baby?
1. Know your guidlelines. All children 12 years old and under should ride in a car in an age/size appropriate restraint (car) seat.
2. Infants 1 years old and under AND 20 lbs or less should be placed in rear facing infant carseats. In other words don't have baby facing foward until after they are age 1 year and if at one year your baby is still less than 20 pounds then wait until they reach that 20 pound benchmark before turning their carseat around to face forwards.
Many times you can purchase an infant carseat that can be placed both ways with a few adjustments.
3. Remember your child should be sitting in the back seat of your vehicle. Install that carseat in one of the back seats.
4. There are carseats and booster seats for all sizes.
5. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the carseat. Have the installation of your infact car seat checked at a carseat safety clinic. Visit SeatCheck to find one in your area.
6. Check for recalled carseats
7. Don't accept used carseats. You have no way of knowing if that carseat has been in an accident OR still meets the carseat safety guidelines. Parents can pick up an Baby carseat safety guide at The American Academy of Pediatrics
