Eeek! I’m Trying to Drive and My Baby is Crying!

Does this happen to you? Attempting to drive anywhere, to the store, grandma’s house, school to pick up your older children, and your baby just hates the carseat and won’t stop crying?

Try these simple tips to see if they will give your baby a smoother ride.

First check that nothing in the carseat is pinching your baby.

Since babies have to ride backwards until one year old your baby could be missing Mommy. Put a mirror up on the seat they are facing so they can see up front.

Music. Many people swear by music. Get specially soothing CDs just for baby and see if the lovely music doesn’t soothe screamer into lala land. There are also CD’s that play white noise or soft music which may be more comforting for baby.

Try fresh air.  Open the window a tad and see if baby doesn’t calm down.

Your baby could be hot. Try less clothing while in the car and bundle up when traveling from car to destination.

If that doesn’t work make sure baby is warm and bundle up.

Some babies hate the confinement of the carseat and need more room. Consider a larger seat. Test drive them if you can.

Try different toys. If you feel like spending some money many moms have found success with a portable DVD player.

If you baby is a newborn and has been crying from day one check with you doctor. Some babies have reflux and the angle of most carseats is aggravating to the condition. A different chair or specialized padding could help.

And finally mom. Take heart. This too shall pass. Yes your baby may cry longer than others but keeping trying different things .
