Sleep and Your Baby. Making up Your Baby’s Bed
When setting up your baby’s bed safety comes first. With all of the recalls and news articles on baby mattresses and beds here are some key things to keep in mind.
- No drop side cribs anymore. If you haven't seen the news just read all the recalls on the CPSC website and you'll know. Some companies are doing repairs on drop side crib to make them stable but it's a good idea to just get one of the stable sided baby cribs be mindful of how we lift babies into and out of their cribs.
- There has been some talk that mattresses can omit some fumes harmful to your baby. If you’re concerned about this there is a baby mattress cover on the market that can put your fears to rest.
- Make sure your baby’s mattress fit’s snugly against the side of the crib so there are no gaps for body part to fall through.
- Crib bumpers are still a debatable item but if you are concerned there are breathable crib bumpers on the market.
- Next up no pillows or blankets in the crib with a baby. Well what is a mom to do to keep baby warm at night? SleepSacks or blanket sleepers are the answer. These things are wonderful and many moms keep baby in them well into the toddler years. Baby is warm but yet able to move around a bit.
- Now what if you have a baby that has a bit of reflux? Well angling the mattress is in order but how? Now that my baby is no longer a baby there are countless baby sleep wedges on the market. When my preemie was just home the home care nurse came and showed us how to roll towels to put under her mattress. Now the only problem was to keep her from sliding to the bottom. Oh well we worked it out. Save yourself the trouble and spend a few extra dollars for the wedge. They come in handy during cold season too and if I remember correctly I could have used one when I was pregnant.
